Rare earth elements and carbon-oxygen isotopes of calcite ...

As a major gangue mineral in many types of hydrothermal deposits, calcite hosts a suite of rare earth elements and yttrium REYs via the substitution of Ca 2 by the trivalent REY ions into the crystal lattice Shannon, 1976, Bau, 1991, Bau and Möller, 1992, Zhong and Mucci, 1995 . Because of the elemental behavioral change with increasing atomic number i.e., lanthanide contraction , the REYs in calcite can be fractionated via many hydrothermal processes.

Calcite - Wikipedia

Calcite is a carbonate mineral and the most stable polymorph of calcium carbonate CaCO 3 . The Mohs scale of mineral hardness, based on scratch hardness comparison, defines value 3 as "calcite". Other polymorphs of calcium carbonate are the minerals aragonite and vaterite.

Rare Earth Elements in Mineral Deposits: Speciation in ...

Calcite and fluorite are common gangue minerals, and trace elements are more compatible in these minerals than in quartz. Calcite has proven to be a useful geochemical tracer for the behavior of the REE in different types of ore-forming fluids and also for determining fluid reservoir properties 27

Rhodochrosite is a cousin of calcite, but where calcite has calcium, rhodochrosite has manganese MnCO 3 . Rhodochrosite is also called raspberry spar. The manganese content gives it a rosy pink color, even in its rare clear crystals. This specimen displays the mineral in its banded habit, but it also takes the botryoidal habit.
